Nathan to Birrell in London: “Insurrection broke out at noon today in Dublin”

Birrell, 70 Elm Park Road, London. April 24th.

Insurrection broke out at noon today in Dublin when attack made on Castle but not pressed home. Since then large hostile parties have occupied Stephens Green and various parties have held up troops marching from barracks firing on them from houses. City Hall, Post Office, Westland Row Station occupied by Sinn Feiners. Some railway bridges blown up and telegraphic communication generally interrupted. Have information of two policemen one officer and half a dozen soldiers killed but casualties may be much more numerous. Situation at present not satisfactory but understand troops now beginning to arrive from Curragh.
