RIC: “Do not attempt to reach Galway without Military”

Telephone message received from Mr Mercer, at depot, 1-15p.m. 27/4/16:-

The following cipher message was received by the I.G. at 11-35a.m. This morning from C.I. Gelston, Ennis:

“Men arriving from Leitrim and Longford. Should an endeavour be made to reach Galway without Military? Should I leave my own County and take charge? I hear Carron Bridge is holding out. Gort quiet. Rumour that more arms are to be landed in South Clare.”

The I.G. replied:-

“Do not attempt to reach Galway without Military. Use available police to push out into Districts to keep touch with the enemy and obtain information”
